It is a French aperitif created in 1846 by the chemist Joseph Dubonnet .
The drink is made from fortified sweet wine, herbs, spices and quinine. This liqueur was created to persuade French foreign legionaries sent to North Africa to drink quinine (very bitter) to combat malaria.
Paradoxes of life, Dubonnet quickly became the aperitif par excellence of the upper classes.
